Garment 1
[ The Stare ]

In the first iteration of the eyes, the mechanics worked really well with the eyes opening and moving to track the faces. I wanted to fine-tune the synchronisation of the two eyes and make the mechanics smaller to fit the body better.

I was happy with the new 3D printed mechanics and they fit the body much better. I found that if the mannequin was too small the garment wouldn’t fit and would put too much weight on the lids. This then meant the eyes wouldn’t open. I had similar issues in the test bed where the mannequin was too small and leant backwards meaning the eyes didn’t work.

I made a few alterations to the garment and changed to a different mannequin, and the eyes opened well. I used a bra underwire to make the eye opening in this version of the garment and this worked really well. It gave the eye a more structured shape and made it look even more eye-like. I changed the mechanics to black which also worked well as you couldn’t see so much behind the eyes. You could still see the little red light though which was effective; I felt like it made it look like a surveillance camera which adds to the creep of the tech.
