An Exploration Into The World Of Knickers

Updated: Feb 4, 2023

When it comes to fashion most of us are slaves to trend, but people tend to be more loyal to a specific style of bras and knickers. This is understandable as comfortable and well fitting underwear is an important part of our day to day wardrobes.

But just sticking to one style of knickers, no matter how well they fit you, can get a bit boring. Not only that, but changing you knicker style to suit your outfit can really make a look bang; think a seamless, high waist thong under a silk skirt or smoothing shorts under a little black dress.

There are a lot of different types of knicker and the more you know, the more styles you can experiment with. We have compiled a list of the different types of knickers to help you expand you lingerie drawer.

Thong

Thong panties are a great option for that no VPL look. Some people wear thongs for comfort reasons as they do not bunch up and can give that barely there feeling (popular with teenagers up and down the country). For anyone with hygiene concerns, then do not worry; as long as your thong isn't too tight and has a cotton lining then you are good to go!

Bikini

The bikini knicker is a classic knicker shape and is often what comes to mind when thinking of knickers. Usually full coverage front and back, you can't go wrong with a bikini shape. This style is really versatile and works in a lot of fabrications including lace, mesh and jersey. A must for every knicker drawer.

Brazilian

A cross between a bikini and a tanga, the Brazilian is usually low and skimpy at the back with a fuller coverage front. This style is great of you want to accentuate your bum or have a bit more on show at the back. This style can be great for a smooth and comfortable line, but it can be a bit tricky and is prone to bunching up so wear with caution!

We have a few variations on the Brazilian and bikini available at our store from the classic Brazilian, the tanga and the Rosa lace Brazilian.

G String

There are many string variations on the thong but the G String is probably the most well known. Essentially a very skimpy thong, the g string is perfect for no VPL. While this style might be some people's worst nightmare, some people swear by them for ultimate comfort and sex appeal. A must try (even if its just once!).

Check out our tanga string for a similar style pattern.

Boyshort

The short or boyshort style is a super comfortable style that ranges from simple jersey to full on luxe looks. The short cut is open to interpretation but the classic boyshort mimics the boxer short shape with straight legs and low sides giving full coverage. Great for comfort, they are ideal for lounging and sleeping. The full coverage also makes them a good option for days when you might accidentally flash in a gust of strong wind.

High Waist

The high waist or full brief is perfect for those who prefer a snug feeling from their underwear. They finish at the waist meaning there will be no elastic digging into your tummy. Despite popular opinions (Bridget Jones we are looking at you), high waist knickers are far from granny pants! They are available in a wide range of fabrics, prints and colours so you are bound to find something to your taste so you can feel sexy and comfortable.

Make your own high waist knickers using one of our two high waist styles.

Shaping

Shaping underwear is a category in its own right with shaping knickers coming in a wide variety of styles. Usually very high waisted, they give a smoothing and controlling affect from their firm, stretchy fabrics. Ideal for creating a smooth line under slinky dresses or suits.

When it comes to knicker types, there is a lot of cross over. You could be hard pressed to tell the difference between a bikini and Brazilian cut, and what one person calls a hiphugger the next might call boyshorts. There is also hybrid styles such as high waist thongs, high leg thongs and boxer strings to name a few. There are a lot of different shapes out there for you to choose from so have fun and experiment!

Do you have a go to style? What is your favourite shape for a VPL? Would you consider trying out some new knicker shapes?
