Materials You'll Need:

  • Outer fabric

  • Lining fabric

  • Batting/fleece (fusible or non-fusible)

  • Elastic (3cm wide, approximately 14cm in length)

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron

  • Scissors

  • Pins

  • Thread

  • Optional: Rouleau maker/loop turner

  • Paper A4

  • Printer

Let's Get Started:

Step 1: Begin by printing the pattern on A4 paper and cutting out the extra large size.

Step 2: Cut out your fabric pieces. You'll need one outer fabric, one lining fabric, and one batting for the front piece. For the side pieces, cut a pair in both the outer and lining fabrics. You can use the same fabrics for the outer and lining, but bear in mind it will be touching they eyelids so needs to be nice and soft! I used a silk satin in this example.

Step 3: If you want to make covered straps (which is totally optional), follow these steps:

  • Cut a strip of fabric measuring 21cm by 8cm.

  • Cut a piece of elastic approximately 14cm long (you can adjust this length to be more comfortable for your head if you need to).

  • Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew using a straight stitch, leaving a 1cm seam allowance.

  • Turn the fabric right side out. You can use a rouleau maker or loop turner, but I used a bobby pin.

  • Attach the elastic to one end of the fabric tube and pull it through using the loop turner or bobby pin. Secure both ends of the elastic with basting stitches.

Step 4: Attach the fusible batting to the wrong side of the outer fabric by pressing with an iron. For non-fusible batting, edge stitch it to the wrong side of the outer fabric using a tacking stitch.

Step 5: Attach the side seams of the outer fabrics by aligning the pieces with right sides together and stitching with a 0.6cm seam allowance. Press the seams and repeat for the lining fabrics.

Step 6: Baste one end of the strap to one side of the outer fabric, ensuring it's on the right/front side of the fabric .

Step 7: Place the inner and outer fabrics together with right sides facing and stitch around the edges, leaving a 4cm gap at the top between the notches. Do not stitch the side without the basted strap.

Step 8: Reach inside the mask and position the loose end of the strap into the side opening. Pin it in place and stitch securely, being careful not to twist the strap.

Step 9: Snip the seam allowance around the edges especially around the nose.

Step 10: Turn the mask right side out through the gap and press it flat to ensure smooth edges. At this step, I added in some fabric scraps for a bit of extra padding. This is a great way to use up some of your fabric waste!

Step 11: Finally, you have two options to finish the mask:

  • Option 1: Edge stitch around the mask, including the gap, to secure everything in place.

  • Option 2: Slip stitch the gap closed for a seamless finish.

And there you have it, your very own extra-large eye mask is ready to accompany you on your journey to relaxation! Experiment with different fabrics and patterns to create a personalized touch. Happy sewing!
